The world is moving toward the era of intelligent computing. High-level research of computer science is one of the keys to technology development. In particular, quantum computing has been rapidly developing and widely applied in many disciplines with fruitful results in recent years.

In view of this, HKPC will organise the “Quantum Technology Awareness Promotion Programme in HK & GBA”, with funding support from the Innovation and Technology Commission, featuring five Training Courses, two-day On-site Quantum Laboratory Visit, and a one-day Symposium. The Programme aims at bringing experts and academics in the field together to share their valuable knowledge, visions and views on the latest developments and future trends in quantum technology.

The program will start by five Training Courses, with Dr. Daniel Ebler, Senior Researcher at Huawei, and Mr. Aoyu Zhang, Senior Applied Scientist at Amazon Web Services as speakers. Two honourable speakers will start from the basics and teach step-by-step the applications of quantum technology in daily life, and up to the future opportunities and challenges in the field.

Topic 1

Introduction – what is a quantum computer, why is quantum computing important, who is investing in it and why?

  1. The motivation of quantum computing, and the quest for supremacy
  2. Inside a quantum computer – how does it work?
  3. Applications in real life – how can the quantum computer change our lives?
  4. Industry and governmental interest – the path towards “good” quantum hardware
Topic 2

Basics – how does computation change when transitioning from current computers to novel quantum technologies?

  1. Graphs, bits, and dynamics
  2. Complex numbers and interference
  3. Basics of quantum computing: from bits to vectors
  4. Coherence and entanglement as the fundamental principles for quantum advantages
 Topic 3

Applications – understanding elementary quantum algorithms and how quantum mechanics allows for advantages.

  1. First principles of quantum computing
  2. The gate model: a pictorial way to draw computations
  3. Elementary algorithms, and where the advantages come from
  4. Outlook: which other milestone algorithms exist? What are their advantages and impact?
Topic 4

Outlook – what are the limitations and challenges of quantum computing,
where are we today, and what are the future directions driven by industry and academia?

  1. Limitations of quantum computing
  2. Challenges of quantum computing – why is it so hard to make them large?
  3. The NISQ era: concurrent developments and perspectives
  4. The “Quantum future” – how will industry and academia change with current demand of quantum technologies?

Quantum Computing on AWS

  1. Introduction for the AWS for Research
  2. Introduction for the AWS for the Quantum Computing
  3. Hands-on workshop for the quantum computing on AWS
