    Course Introduction

    The Certificate of IP Laws and Practice (CIPL) is a well-recognised course suitable for all Intellectual Property (IP) and corporate managers, as well as parties who are interested in the IP laws. It is a one-stop course designed for participants to gain comprehensive knowledge of IP laws and obtain the latest updates of different regions, with useful workshops and case studies to explore practical aspects of handling IP applications/issues. After attending the course, participants will also gain sound knowledge to develop IP protection plans and IP enforcement strategy in business operations. Participants will receive a certificate upon completion of the respective training course.

    Learning Outcomes

      • To gain a deeper knowledge about IP laws in different jurisdictions, including trademark laws in Hong Kong and PRC, patent laws in Hong Kong, PRC, US, and Europe; design and copyright laws in Hong Kong

    About the Lecturers

    Dr Lewis LUK, MH, JP  (LL. B Dip. CL, DBA (Management Science), FKC, IP Arbitrator, Industrial Engineer)

    Dr Lewis Luk is a senior associate of P C Woo Co, Solicitors Notaries, a Panelist on Domain Names and an Arbitrator for Intellectual Property Disputes under the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre ( HKIAC). He is the founding president of the Professional Validation Council of Hong Kong Industries (PVCHK), the Hong Kong Brands Protection Alliance (HKBPA) and the Hong Kong Institute of Patent Attorneys (HKIPA). He is also an Adjunct Professor in Faculty of Engineering of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

    Mr  Henry LUK (LL. B, MSc, PGDipCompL)

    Mr Henry Luk possesses around a decade of experience in handling a full range of IP matters including the prosecution of patent and trademark applications worldwide.  He is currently employed by Squire Patton Boggs, a full service global law firm with more than 1 500 lawyers in 45 offices across 20 countries. He holds a Bachelor of Laws from King’s College London and a Master of Science from the University of Warwick and is a Council Associate of the Hong Kong Institute of Patent Attorneys (HKIPA).  He has rich training experience in patent, trademark and IP management and has been a
    guest lecturer in relevant training programmes of HKPC, HKIPA and the University of Warwick.

    Mr Eric FUNG (HK Solicitor)

    Mr Eric Fung is a solicitor of Benny Kong & Tsai Solicitors and possesses around 15 years of commercial litigation with a focus on IP litigation in recent years. Mr Fung is experienced in civil company litigation and enforcement of judgement.  With his established commercial litigation background, Mr Fung advises clients on extensive IP matters from practical perspectives.  His practice also includes adverse possession, shareholder disputes, commercial disputes, grant of probate and injunction application.

    Mr David TSAI (Partner, HK Solicitor)

    Mr David Tsai is a partner of Benny Kong &Tsai Solicitors.  He has been identified by the Asia Law Leading Lawyers surveys as one of Asia’s Leading Lawyers for Intellectual Property.  Mr Tsai has extensive experience in the areas of contentious and non-contentious IP matters, IP transactions and information technologies. His practice includes trademark and patent applications, IP litigation and strategy, and IP enforcement.  He is a member of International Trademark Association (INTA),  Asian Patent Attorneys Association ( APAA), Hong Kong Institute of Patent Attorneys (HKIPA), International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI), and Licensing  Executives Society(LES).

    Dr Kam Wah LAW (PhD, HK Solicitor, US Patent Attorney)

    Dr Kam Wah Law is a US patent attorney as well as a Hong Kong solicitor.  He is the vice-president of Hong Kong Institute of Patent Practitioners (HIPP).   He was a partner in Squire Patton Boggs, an international law firm with 45 offices in 20 countries.  In 2018 he founded Draxtal IP consulting Limited, a company providing consultations and advice to clients in worldwide IP management and strategy.  He can provide opinions regarding patentability, freedom to operate, infringement or non-infringement, invalidity or validity opinions. He also helps clients in applying for and prosecuting trademark and patent applications in the US and Hong Kong. Prior to his career in law he worked at 3M and Samsung Electronics as a scientist and then a patent manager.  As a prolific inventor himself, he has obtained more than 200 patents worldwide for 3M and Samsung Electronics.

    Mr Nathan WONG (PRC Patent Attorney)
    Mr Nathan Wong is an experienced IP specialist and is now heading the Intellectual Property Centre of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries(FHKI). Starting from 2011, he has built extensive networks and accumulated ample experience in IP services. Mr Wong specialises in exploring the strengths of each IP and their contribution to enterprises. In 2016, he was qualified as a Patent Attorney in Mainland China. His wide-ranging practice covers all aspects of IP work, including assisting clients with managing, protecting and commercialising their IP portfolios and handling patent specification drafting, patent prosecution, examination report review and response, etc.

    Mr Sum LAM (Solicitor Advocate, practicing PRC patent attorney, practicing patent litigator and qualified Chinese Attorney-at-Law)

    Mr Sum Lam is a senior patent attorney and a solicitor advocate (both civil and criminal proceedings) in England and Wales. He has a wide range of practising experience in IP, IT, Media and Data.  Up to this date, he has handled more than 8000 non-contentious and contentious, prosecution and litigation cases. Three of his cases were selected by Chinese courts and tribunals (including Chinese Supreme People’s Court) as “Model Cases”. Mr Lam is the first Hongkonger who passed the Chinese patent bar exam (2004) in history and is one of the very few Hongkongers nailing the tough Chinese bar examination with outstanding performance. He chairs the Tsinghua University Law School Hong Kong Postgraduates Association and the Hong Kong Chinese Patent Attorneys Association (HKCPAA) and is the Vice-President of the Hong Kong Institute of Patent Attorneys (HKIPA).

    Dr Man Chun LAW (MSc, PhD, PRC Patent Attorney)

    Dr Joe Law is a patent attorney and is the Patent and Legal Director of GRST Holdings Limited, who specialises in providing IP strategic planning and enforcement for the company. As a patent attorney, and having received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in chemistry, he supervises the filing and prosecution of IP applications of GRST worldwide. Prior to joining GRST, Dr Law was associated with international law firm , Squire Patton Boggs,  in its Hong Kong office, where he advised multinational clients on IP matters and enforcement of patent rights. He is a vice chairman of Hong Kong Chinese Patent Attorneys
    Association (HKCPAA) and a secretary general of the Hong Kong Institute of Patent Attorney (HKIPA).

    Mr Hans LEE (Chartered Patent Attorney & Solicitor)

    Mr Hans Lee is an IP solicitor and a Chartered Patent Attorney of You Yi International Intellectual Property Services Limited.  He was a partner heading the IP practices at FitzGerald Lawyers, Nixon Peabody CWL and ONC Lawyers. Mr Lee has been acknowledged as an Asia IP Expert by Asia IP, among the world’s leading patent professionals by IAM Patent 1000 and as an IP Star by Managing IP. He’s also been a finalist for the International Law Office Client Choice Awards in IP-Patents. He has particular experience in telecommunications, semiconductors, electronic devices, power tools, biotechnology, anti-counterfeiting technology and software.
